Summer dress is a constant topic at Royal St. George’s College. Why even wear summer dress when it costs 200 dollars and you can only wear it for around 8 weeks? Our group decided that with all the constant complaint about summer dress duration, we decided that this project was a good time to express not just our views but how most of the school, 92% of it according to our survey would want to extend the duration of summer dress to the month of October and start summer dress in the month of April.
Extending Summer Dress for October and April
Our proposal is a new refined scheduling of when you can wear summer dress. We would like to see the block of time where you can wear summer dress extend into October at the beginning of the school year and also it would be great to see the month of April include Summer dress as an option.
Taking Action/Alternatives to Solution
Although our group is attempting to persuade the College on extending the duration of summer dress, we have to include the alternative situations that we may agree with and some that we may not. One solution is for the board and the headmaster to not go through and agree with this offer, and not extend summer dress. A second situation that could happen is for the board and headmaster to agree with this offer, the offer 92% of the school agrees with. A third option could include having a hybrid third uniform, a “business casual uniform friday” which could be a mix of the uniforms; slack’s/khaki’s and a dress shirt with no tie. This would be a very interesting idea because it looks professional, and is a little warmer option to wear in the months of October and April.
Weather
Firstly, October and April are a cooler months compared to September, May and June. People like summer dress because it tends to be apparel for warmer weather in school during these months. Although these months may be a little colder, our research suggests that the average temperature for October and April is around 15-16 degrees, which is absolutely warm enough for summer apparel. Extending summer dress would make 92% of our school more satisfied, but to fully be able to express views on why summer dress duration should be increased, we need think about the other 8 percent of the school and their reasons of why we should not increase the duration.
Advantages and Disadvantages
A second problem that some people may have with extending summer dress is the loss of tradition and less of a professional look for these months. #1 dress is obviously more professional and is a long time tradition at RSGC. Conversely, student satisfaction is an important thing at RSGC and many students are content with sacrificing some traditions for extended summer dress times. One advantage of summer dress is that is could increase student focus. As students wearing summer dress should be cooler, they are not drowsy and focusing on cooling down like they are wearing number one dress.
Evaluation of Wearing Summer Dress
As we have explained in our presentation, the advantages of extending of summer dress are much greater than the disadvantages. More than 90% of the student body sample of RSGC agree with decision and attentiveness in class would increase. The weather also allows for summer dress and the purchase would be more cost effective. Our alternative suggestion of the business casual dress is also a legitimate offer that the board, faculty, students, and whole school should look closer at.
